Creating Space For God

Have you ever gotten to the middle of your day and realized you never did that thing you set out to do as soon as you woke up, even though you really meant to?

Many of us start our day by reaching for our phone, checking messages, and thinking about everything we need to do. Before long the day is moving quickly and our time with God gets squeezed into whatever space is left, if there is even space left at all.

Even with the best of intentions, sometimes the day simply gets away from me. I wake up planning to sit down with my bible and spend quiet time with the Lord. But then something grabs my attention, or one of my boys needs me to help them. Or a message pops up that feels urgent. Suddenly the morning is moving faster than I expected.

Before I know it, I am already into the responsibilities of life and the quiet space I hoped to have with God has slipped away.

Maybe you have experienced something similar.

Life is full and good and beautiful, but it is also busy. And even when we deeply desire to prioritize time with God, it can quietly get pushed to whatever space remains.

But what if creating space for God was not about finding leftover moments in our day, but about intentionally making room for Him at the center of it?

This season is an opportunity to intentionally create space for Him.

April feels like a season of renewal. The days grow longer, the ground begins to wake up, and everywhere we look there are reminders that life is beginning again.

It is fitting that Easter falls in this same season.

As Easter approaches, we are reminded of the foundation of our faith. Jesus willingly went to the cross, defeated sin and death, and rose again so that we could have new life in Him.

Because of the resurrection, we are not simply people who believe certain truths. We are people who walk daily with a living Savior.

Creating space for God is our response to that reality. We slow down not out of obligation, but because we want to be near the One who gave everything for us.

When we open His Word, pray, and sit quietly before Him, we are stepping into the relationship that Jesus made possible through the resurrection.

God was never meant to be the last thing we get to.  He was always meant to be the first place we start.

Some of us reading this already have rhythms of time with God. We read Scripture. We pray. We show up for church and community. These rhythms are beautiful and life giving.

But even good rhythms can slowly become routine if we are not careful. We read Gods Word without truly letting it shape us. We pray while our minds are already moving to the next task of the day.

Creating space for God is not only about setting aside time. It is about creating room in our hearts for Him to speak, lead, and transform us.

Jesus himself modeled this kind of intentional time with the Father.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark,  Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35

Even in the middle of a busy ministry, Jesus created space to be with God.

Creating space for God is not limited to a quiet moment in the morning, and it certainly does not have to mean adding something else to your schedule. It is about returning to Him again and again throughout the day. A short prayer. A moment of gratitude. A pause to remember that Christ is present with us even in the middle of ordinary tasks.

I have found it helpful to create small spiritual anchors throughout my day.

Time in scripture in the morning.
A short prayer in the middle of the day.
My favorite scripture framed on the wall in the kitchen.
Worship music while I am driving.
A few minutes of quiet reflection in the evening.
These small rhythms keep drawing my heart back to God.

Spiritual growth rarely happens in a hurry. It happens in the quiet spaces where we slow down long enough for God to shape us.

A Simple Practice for April

This month, try adding five minutes of stillness to your day.  Sit quietly and ask:

"Lord, what are You inviting me to notice, change, or trust today?"

Resist the urge to rush to the next task. Simply sit with Him and listen. Create space.

Spiritual growth rarely happens in a hurry. It happens in the quiet spaces where we slow down long enough for God to shape us.

My prayer for you this month is that you would find renewed joy in creating space for God, not out of obligation, but out of the deep desire to walk closely with the risen Savior who walks with us every day.
